臨床表面の汚染除去のための単回使用の布と再使用可能な布の環境フットプリントの比較:ライフサイクルアプローチ

背景
地球規模の持続可能性は、現在、われわれが住むこの惑星で直面している主な健康上の懸念である。医療部門は、環境破壊活動の重要な寄与因子の 1 つである。医療現場の環境表面の清掃および消毒において、再使用可能な布は、主に用いられている単回使用の表面ワイプの環境に優しい代替品の 1 つとして検討されるべきである。
目的
医療現場の表面の汚染除去に関する現在の方針を簡単に見直すこと、次に、適合する 3 種の消毒薬とともに、再使用可能な綿およびマイクロファイバーの布を従来の単回使用の布と比較してライフサイクル影響評価(LCIA)を実行すること。
方法
方針の簡単な見直しは、7 か国を対象とした。ライフサイクル影響評価はインプット、アウトプット、ライフサイクルにわたるプロセスを対象とし、EcoInvent database v3.7.1 および open LCIA software を用いた。欧州推奨の 16 の環境影響カテゴリーと、8 つのヒトの健康カテゴリーを検討した。
結果
検討した感染予防方針では、清掃および消毒に単回使用ワイプを義務付けていなかった。最も環境への影響が大きい消毒薬は、イソプロピルアルコールであった。臨床表面の汚染除去のために最も環境的に持続可能な選択肢は、マイクロファイバーの布を四級アンモニウム化合物とともに使用した場合であった。最も環境的に持続可能でない選択肢は、綿とイソプロピルアルコールであった。
結論
影響は主に消毒薬の使用と輸送プロセスに起因していた。
監訳者コメント:
今までは色々な領域で「単回使用」が推奨されてきたが、これからはやはり「環境への配慮」とのバランスが必要とされるだろう。日本の「もったいない文化」が見直される時代をいち早く見越した取り組みがこれから進みそうだ。
