背景

新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）は、社会、とくに医療提供の領域において重要な課題を世界的にもたらしている。COVID-19 による危機的状況において、効果的な個人防護具（PPE）の適切な供給を維持するための解決策の提供により、医療問題に取り組む人々を保護することが急務である。

目的

N95 マスク再利用時の機能性を維持しながら汚染除去を図る有用な方法について評価し、妥当性を検証すること。

方法

低温蒸気および過酸化水素蒸気（VHP）による複数の技術を、マイコバクテリウム（Mycobacterium）属菌とネコカリシウイルス（汚染曝露の代表として使用）の不活化により評価した。

結果

PPE の性能に影響を及ぼさない一連の加熱（65 ～ 71°C）、湿度（＞ 50％相対湿度）、VHP により、各種タイプの N95 マスクにおけるウイルス（≧ 3log₁₀）およびマイコバクテリウム属菌（≧ 6log₁₀）の不活化が得られた。

結論

この方法は妥当性が確認されており、米国食品医薬品局（US Food and Drug Administration）による緊急使用許可が付与された。結果を踏まえると、今後、必要性が生じれば、簡便で汎用性のある材料と器具によってできる汚染除去法の開発および展開の機会があるだろう。
