ニューモシスチス一次感染症を発症した乳児におけるニューモシスチスの呼気中への排出：病院および地域における推定感染源★

ニューモシスチス一次感染症を発症した乳児 14 例のうち、3 例から 気液衝突装置を用いて 1 m の距離で採取した空気サンプル中から、PCRアッセイによりニューモシスチス・イロベチイ（Pneumocystis jirovecii）DNAが検出された。3 対の空気サンプルのうち 1 対で P. jirovecii の遺伝子型を特定できた。鼻咽頭サンプルと空気サンプルの間で P. jirovecii 遺伝子型のマッチングを行ったところ、感染乳児から P. jirovecii が高い効率で呼気中へ排出されたことが示唆された。これらの結果は、ニューモシスチス一次感染症を発症した乳児が、病院および地域において P. jirovecii の感染源となり得ることの概念実証となっている。
監訳者コメント：
ニューモシスチス感染症発症の乳児がニューモシスチスの重要なリザーバーとなりうることを示した研究。ニューモシスチス感染症は標準予防策での対応となるが、乳児や免疫不全者は同室で管理してはならない。
