本研究では、オーストラリアの主要な 3 次紹介病院 1 施設における鋭利物損傷の発生率を明らかにするための購入データの利用について示した。購入された物品 100,000 個あたりの損傷の発生率は注射針で 2.65、外科用メスの刃で 12.60 であった。これらの数値は以前に本手法を用いて報告された数値よりも低かった。縫合針による損傷の発生率はこれまで報告されていなかったが、購入された物品 100,000 個あたり 31.89 であった。このような方法で算出された発生率のデータは、施設職員の安全対策に関する方針と実践を知らせるために、購入費の見積もりとともに利用できる可能性がある。

監訳者コメント
鋭利器材による損傷は、医療従事者にとって職務上最も感染リスクの高いものであり、予防のための安全確保は必須である。これまで鋭利物による損傷は発生率により評価され、機器の使用数や手技頻度を分母にして算定されていた。分母を器材購入数や中央材料部への依頼数にしている文献もあり、本論文では鋭利器材の購入数を利用して鋭利物による損傷の割合を算出することで、新機材を購入した場合の機器購入の費用とその効果についても評価することができ、有用であるとしている。
