COVID-19 パンデミックの状況下、フェイスマスクの着用は、病院だけでなく市中でも一般的になり随所で目にするようになった。とはいえ、一般市民は、その特性を問わずサージカルマスクや filtering facepiece（FFP）マスクを使用しており、もっとも曝露される人々、つまり医療従事者における世界的な供給不足をもたらしている。このことは、マスクを合理的に使用するために、マスクの種類ごとに適用を明確化する緊急性を強調するものである。本稿では、医療従事者用の呼吸用保護具の合理的な使用に関するフランスの見解を述べる。

COVID-19 の感染経路は、①咳・くしゃみによる飛沫感染、②目鼻口などの粘膜への接触感染である。マスク着用は、病院のみならず一般社会においても当たり前になっている。その結果マスクの供給不足が発生し、医療現場への供給が制限される事態となり、フランス政府は、「マスク着用に関するガイドライン」を制定した。微粒子マスクは、FFP2 が N95 に相当するが、この着用はエアロゾル発生時に限定され、医療用サージカルマスクの着用も適応は日本と大きく変わりはない。大きく異なるところは、着用時間が定められており、サージカルマスクは最大 4 時間（WHOは 6 時間）で交換、湿ってくれば直ぐに交換する、FFP2 は 8 時間以内でメーカーの指示（再使用と単回使用）に従うとなっている。これ以外のマスクについては医療現場での使用は推奨されていない。
