麻疹は医療従事者にとって職業リスクの 1 つである。2017 年から 2018 年のギリシャで医療従事者において麻疹症例計 117 例が認められた。著者らは、そのうち 46 名と連絡が取れた。連絡が取れた医療従事者のほとんどは、合併症を伴う重篤な臨床経過をたどり、症例の 67％で入院を要した。すべての医療従事者が長期欠勤したと報告し、欠勤期間は平均で 21.2 就業日（範囲 3 ～ 60 日）であった。医療従事者の 54.3％は、症状を有しながらの就業が平均で 2.3 就業日（範囲 1 ～ 7 日）であったと報告した。麻疹による平均の疾患関連総費用は、医療従事者 1名当たり 4,739 ユーロであった。医療従事者で認められた 117 例における直接・間接の総費用は554,494 ユーロにのぼり、これは真の費用より低い推定値であると考えられた。

ギリシャにおける麻疹の医療従事者の罹患と関連する費用の報告。麻疹罹患に伴うコストを推定しているが、実際には自己負担費用や接触者の追跡などの感染管理に対する費用などが含まれておらず実際の費用はさらに高額になる。麻疹に罹患したスタッフのほとんどが完全に予防接種を受けていなかったことから、改めて医療従事者に対する予防接種プログラムの重要性が理解できる。
