感染性病原体の感染や保菌が疑われる患者または確認されている患者における標準的な感染経路別の予防策に関する現在の推奨は、職業感染症の可能性をもたらす自己汚染から医療従事者を守るというよりも、他の患者への微生物伝播の予防、換言すれば、医療関連感染症発生の予防に最適である。本稿は、現在推奨されている感染予防・制御策をレビューし、労働衛生の観点から予防・制御の改善を図るためのフレームワークを提示する。業務の実践および環境に起因する 2 つの曝露経路（接触およびエアロゾル）を用いたモデルを示し、特定の病原微生物が病院および市中環境の患者や他の非就業者に伝播していく典型的な経路から焦点を移す。

医療従事者本人曝露による自身の感染ではなく、関わった医療従事者を介して間接的に他の患者に伝播させない方策について考察している。本論文ではシナリオの展開だけにとどまっている。
