A close shave? Performance of P2/N95 respirators in healthcare workers with facial hair: results of the BEARDS (BEnchmarking Adequate Respiratory DefenceS) study

P2/N95 マスクは、医療従事者を空気感染から守る。本研究では男性医療従事者 105 名（そのうち 38 名は髭をきれいに剃った状態）において、定量的なマスクの密着性に対する髭の影響を評価し、研究実施施設における男性の髭の比率を評価した。適切なマスクの密着を達成したのは男性医療従事者全体で 34 名（32％）のみであり、髭をきれいに剃った男性のうち 47％が含まれた。顔面の髭をすべて伸ばした状態の医療従事者で密着を達成した人はいなかった。髭の増加に伴って、適切なマスクの密着は有意に低下した（傾向の P 値＜ 0.01）。髭は男性従事者のうち 49％に存在した。本研究は、P2/N95 マスクの使用前の定量的フィットテストを支持するものである。

監訳者コメント：
髭が N95 マスクの密着性を妨げることは過去から言われていることであるが、CDC も2017年 に髭と N95 について言及しているが、新型コロナウイルスの出現により再度注目されている。さらに NIOSH の規格は通過しているものの全く顔にフィットしない N95 マスクが巷にあふれている。N95 はあくまで 5μm 以下の微粒子の吸入を阻止するために着用するのであって、フィットテストは必須である。髭のデザインにより、N95 は大きくその効果が変化するため、髭の形状は重要である。ちなみに CDC が髭と N95 のフィット性をインフォグラフィックにしているので、是非参照して欲しい。
