背景
医療関連感染症に関与する病原体は環境内、とくに高頻度接触面に急速に拡散し、この接触面は病原体のリザーバとなる可能性がある。

目的
本研究の目的は、フランスの 5 つの長期ケア施設において、接触面に自然発生する細菌汚染について調査するとともに、銅表面と対照表面から回収される細菌群を比較することである。

方法
1,300 超の表面から検体を採取した。接触面に定着する培養可能な細菌群の全体像を得るために、採取した細菌を同定した。さらに、特定の寒天培地を用いて溶血性のコロニーおよび推定病原体をスクリーニングし、マトリックス支援レーザー脱離イオン化飛行時間型質量分析法により同定した。全体で 3,400 超のコロニーを分析した。

結果
接触面に優勢に存在したのはブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus）属およびミクロコッカス（Micrococcus）属の 2 種類で、それぞれ、対照表面の 51.8％、48.0％に発生した。バイオバーデンが相対的に低値のこれらの施設において、銅表面では、ブドウ球菌属、レンサ球菌（Streptococcus）属、ロゼオモナス（Roseomonas）属の 3 種類の発生頻度が効果的に低下した。黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）、エンテロコッカス・フェカーリス（Enterococcus faecalis）、エンテロコッカス・フェシウム（Enterococcus faecium）などの病原性菌種がきわめて少数のサン
プルで認められた。さらに、メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌が、5 つの対照表面および 1 つの銅表面で認められた。

結論
医療施設の接触面の汚染は、施設のあらゆる場所で細菌の拡散源となりうる。今回の現場研究では、汚染頻度のほかに特定の細菌群によるバイオバーデンも、銅合金表面上で低下することが示された。

監訳者コメント：

銅の持つ抗菌作用は古くから認識されている。ベッドレールや点滴支柱などに銅コーティングをほどこした製品もあるが、思ったほどには普及していないように感じる。金額と色合いが原因であろうか。
