Difficulty in removing biofilm from dry surfaces

感染制御のためには清掃が欠かせない。本報告では、黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）のバイオフィルムは、乾燥させた浮遊細菌（planktonic bacteria）よりも除去することが有意に困難であることを明らかにした。1 回の拭き取りで、乾燥浮遊細菌の 99.9％超（＞ 3 log₁₀）が除去されたのに対して、バイオフィルムについては、標準的な拭き取り法による 50 回の拭き取りで除去されたのは 96.66％（1.4 log₁₀）にとどまった。

監訳者コメント：
バイオフィルムには、拭き取りによる力学的な除去が有効であるが、それに対して抵抗性を示すことも容易に想像できる。様々な評価法があるが、本研究は直線運動による拭き取りの強さと回数を変えて、通常の溶液中の細菌（浮遊細菌）と比較して、バイオフィルム産生状態がどのくらい抵抗性を示すのか、定量的に評価したものである。バイオフィルム産生状態では、10 ～ 20回の拭き取りではほとんど菌は除去できず、50 回行ってようやく約 30 分の 1 になったにすぎなかった。これ以上の検討は行っていないが、回数を増やしても浮遊細菌のレベルまで達することは不可能であろうし、実際には拭き取り周辺部の汚染や、手指への付着といった問題も出てくる。バイオフィルム除去という課題は大きく、複雑といえる。
