‘Off the rails’: hospital bed rail design, contamination, and the evaluation of their microbial ecology

患者付近の環境の微生物汚染は、認知されている院内の病原体のリザーバーの 1 つである。病院のベッド、特にベッド柵は、観察研究・介入研究において、頻繁にまた重度に汚染されていることが示されてきた。長年にわたってベッド柵のデザインの複雑さが進んできた一方で、これらの表面の微生物汚染は十分に評価されてこなかった。発表された多くの研究において、極めて重要であるデザインの可変部分に関しては記述されておらず、結果を他の環境へ外挿することを困難にしている。本報告では、病院のベッドとベッド柵の進化する構造、異なるデザイン要素の微生物汚染への潜在的影響および病原体伝播における役割についてレビューする。我々の知見は、環境衛生調査の一環として、ベッド柵および同様の患者区域の表面の汚染レベルを正確に評価するための標準評価手順を明確にする必要性を裏付けている。

監訳者コメント：
ベッド柵は代表的な「高頻度接触面」であり、その清掃の重要性は以前から繰り返し指摘されてきた。一方で本論文中でも写真で紹介されているとおり、ベッドの操作パネルが配備されるなど、ベッド柵は「進化」している。本論文はありそうでなかったベッド柵に特化したレビューである。
