医療関連感染（HCAI）の負担は、従来、臨床転帰および経済的結果を用いて評価されてきた。HCAI の影響をよりよく理解するため、多剤耐性菌に起因する HCAI に感染した 18 例の患者または患者の介護者に、半構造化面接を実施した。ほとんどの患者は HCAI と抗菌薬耐性について誤解しており、彼らの医療提供者の肯定的見解にもかかわらず、HCAI に対する強い否定的な感情につながっていた。HCAI によるトラウマへの対処を促進するためには、患者と医療提供者間の力の不均衡を背景としたコミュニケーションの問題に取り組む必要がある。患者の視点を取り入れた HCAI に対する包括的なアプローチは、政策立案者が患者の転帰改善のための解決策を生み出すのを助ける可能性がある。

監訳者コメント：
HCAI に感染した患者とその家族に対する調査は、これまでなかなか行われてこなかった。HCAI を生じた状況、医療従事者の関わり、医療環境、文化的背景は様々であり、またそれを研究としてまとめる点にも課題があった。本検討は貴重な試みの一つであり、また本邦での研究を鑑みるうえでも非常に参考になるであろう。
