多剤耐性グラム陰性菌は臨床上の大きな懸念事項である。カルバペネマーゼ産生腸内細菌科細菌（CPE）は、カルバペネム系薬などすべてのβ‐ラクタム系薬に耐性を示すとともに、大腸に定着する能力を有しており、その有病率の増加は重大な脅威となっている。伝播を最小限に抑えるために、CPE の腸管内定着の迅速かつ正確な検出は重要であり、結果的に、費用がかかり治療が困難な CPE 感染症を低減させる。現在のところ「ゴールドスタンダード」とされる CPE 検出法はない。英国の診断検査法の調査により、CPE の診断検査の方法と手順に、かなりのばらつきがみられた。
