誤報は以前からあるとはいえ、フェイクニュースが世界の隅々にまで到達しうる範囲とスピードは近年特有の現象である。感染予防・制御の領域では、実践科学の分野とプロセスへの真摯な姿勢が、「不快な振動音」とフェイクニュースの被害からわれわれを防御するものと信じたい。この誤った認識によって、医療従事者は、誤報が公衆衛生に及ぼす悪影響を過小評価することになる。本稿では、感染予防・制御の領域と公衆の間で何が起こっているのか、その関連性に焦点を当てる。目的は、医学界と公衆の間で情報がいかに歪められ、増幅されているかを調査することと、さらに注意すべき問題のいくつかの概要を示すことである。管理が不十分な 1 件の研究でも、公衆衛生に深刻な悪影響を及ぼす可能性があること、そして、優れた管理の研究がねじまげられ、虚偽の内容を人々に信じさせる可能性があることを示した多くの症例研究に注目する。ピアレビュー無しで出版するオンラインジャーナルの公開と拡散という現在のシステムにおいて、「不快な振動音」とフェイクニュースは相当な被害を急速にもたらしうる。

フェイクニュースに振り回されると医療は混乱する。たとえば、それは施設内での単純な医療者の不注意で不適切な理解から発生する場合もあるし、国際的な有名科学雑誌への論文であったりしてもおかしくはない。情報のすべては信用できるのかどうかが問われる時代となった。
