本稿では、経済学の分野を明確にし、なぜ経済学が有用であるかを述べる。感染症予防に従事する人々に関連する経済的転帰を評価する方法についてレビューするとともに、競合プログラムにおける最善策の選択に役立つ情報を意思決定者がどのように使用すべきか検討する。優れた経済学によって、資源の乏しい条件下で機能する感染予防サービスにより健康上の利益が高められると主張して、締めくくる。

手指衛生遵守率の向上による感染予防などがいかに医療経済的にみてコストパフォーマンスが良いのかをデータで示すことによって、感染予防の徹底は医療経済的にコストパフォーマンスが良いので徹底すべきだということを周知することで、味方につける作戦を説いている。
