歯科治療（超音波歯石除去および専門家による機械的歯面清掃）中に生じたエアロゾルおよび飛散物は、潜在的な感染症の原因である。歯科治療前後の、作業者のマスク、ゴーグル、胸部および着衣で覆われた右腕、ならびに患者のゴーグル上の汚染パターンを、ATP の生物発光分析を用いて検討した。試験したすべての表面上の汚染が歯科治療後に有意に増加した。最大の汚染は患者のゴーグル上に見られた。したがって、歯科治療中に生じたエアロゾルおよび飛散物は、作業者と患者に感染症を伝播する可能性がある。ATP の生物発光は、表面汚染をモニタリングするのに有用な手段である。

監訳者コメント：
歯科の治療中は口腔内から多くの飛散物があり、粘膜への直接曝露から医療従事者を守るために装着しているマスクやゴーグルは当然のことながら種々の病原体で汚染される。しかしながら、客観的にその汚染具合を把握することはできないため、汚染の実感が医療従事者にはなく、感染対策が疎かとなる可能性が高い。本論文では ATP を使用して歯科治療における汚染状況を客観的に評価し、その危険性を報告している。さらに、歯科治療中に発生するエアロゾルは空気中を漂い、空気感染をおこす危険性があり、治療中に発生する口腔内細菌あるいはウイルスを含むエアロゾル対策も感染予防対策の上では同時に考慮すべきであろう。
