抗菌薬耐性の増加と血液培養装置のデザインの進歩にもかかわらず、検査室における血液培養の処理方法は過去 30 年間変化しないままである。研究実施病院において、血液培養装置を血液検査室に置き、血液培養管理の分析前段階および分析段階を最適化することで、ほとんどの血液培養分離株について検出までの時間が 12 時間以内に短縮した。大腸菌（Escherichia coli）を含む血液培養陽性の 50％では、最終的に抗菌薬感受性試験の結果が 24 時間以内に報告された。大腸菌陽性の血液培養の 85％超では、採血から 36 時間以内に抗菌薬感受性試験の結果が報告されていたのに対し、対照病院では 66 時間かかっていた。

監訳者コメント：
菌種によって血液培養で同定できるタイミングが異なる。従って、陽性を検出するタイミングが重要である。陽性時にリアルタイムに抗菌薬療法の軌道修正ができれば、患者の救命率を上げることが可能だろう。
