医療機関内でのトコジラミの疫学についてはほとんど分かっていないが、自然環境下では若虫が優勢である。本研究では医療センター内で捕獲したトコジラミの生育ステージを決定したが、ステージが進んだトコジラミの方が、より若い個体よりも、捕獲される割合が高いことが判明した。さらに捕獲された初齢幼虫、3 ～ 5 齢幼虫、および雌成虫の数は、自然環境下で認められた各生育ステージの個体数と有意に異なった（P ＜ 0.01）。相当数の若齢のトコジラミが医療センター内へ持ち込まれており、病院スタッフに見逃されている可能性がある。

監訳者コメント：
医療機関内にトコジラミ（南京虫）が持ち込まれているとの指摘は、重大な意味を持つ。近年本邦でもピレスロイド系殺虫剤に対する抵抗性を獲得したトコジラミが、宿泊施設や一般家庭での急増していると報告されており、医療機関内での発生及び患者発生について十分警戒しておかねばならない。
