単一施設の対照前後比較研究において、深部脳刺激を受ける患者 182 例を対象として、鼻腔内ムピロシン軟膏およびクロルヘキシジン入りの洗浄剤使用後に黄色ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus aureus）鼻腔内保菌の有無を確認することにより、手術部位感染（SSI）が減少するかどうかを検討した。全部で、対照群に 119 例、スクリーニング群に 63 例を組み入れた。2 群間に 10.9％から 1.6％への SSI の有意な減少がみられた（P ＜ 0.04、相対リスク 0.13、95％信頼区間 0.003 ～ 0.922）。黄色ブドウ球菌による SSI は、対照群で 8 件であったが、スクリーニング群では認められなかった。SSI の特定のリスク因子は認められなかった。

監訳者コメント：
黄色ブドウ球菌の保菌者に対してムピロシン軟膏の鼻腔内塗布とクロルヘキシジン浴による除菌処置を試みそのアウトカムとしての SSI の発生をみている。（抗菌薬耐性や消毒薬抵抗性菌の出現の観点から）MRSA でなくても除菌をするかどうかが検討課題であろう。
