歯科用ユニットの水ラインの細菌汚染を、ATP の生物発光分析と従来の培養法を用いて評価した。歯科用ユニットの水ラインから採取した水サンプル(N = 44)を、R2A 寒天での培養により従属栄養細菌について調べた結果、細菌数は1.4 × 103 ~ 2.7 × 105 コロニー形成単位(cfu)/mL の範囲であった。この水ラインのサンプルを ATP 生物発光法により処理したところ、6 ~ 1,189 相対発光量という結果が 1 分以内に得られ、相対発光量の値は培養法での細菌数と強く相関していた(r = 0.727 ~ 0.855)。これらの結果より、ATP 生物発光法の結果は従来の培養法に基づく結果を正確に反映していると結論づけることができた。本法は、歯科用ユニットの水ラインの細菌汚染の迅速かつ簡便なモニタリング法として、有用である可能性がある。

監訳者コメント
ATP の生物発光分析は、すでに環境表面や飲食物の細菌汚染を簡便に知る方法として、その有用性が明らかになっている。難培養性である菌や、バイオフィルム産生菌も含め、広い範囲の細菌を検出できる点が優れている。使用前の歯科用ユニットから採取した検体は CDC などの推奨基準を上回って汚染されており、現実的な対処として、使用前のフラッシングの徹底は非常に重重要である。さらに本法を用いた定期的な汚染のチェックも有用といえる。
