医療従事者の季節性インフルエンザワクチン接種率は、5％未満から 90％超までと、全世界で大きく異なる。ワクチンの有効性と副作用に対する認識は、接種率に影響を及ぼす因子として一般に受け入れられている。これらの因子は個人レベルおよび社会レベルで作用して医療従事者の考え方や行動に影響を及ぼしうる。ワクチン接種率はまた、鳥インフルエンザなど他の非季節性インフルエンザパンデミックの発生によっても影響を受けた。ワクチン接種率の向上のために様々な対策が取られており、中でも重要なものとしては、地方自治体による勧告の発令、実践ガイドラインの普及、ワクチン義務化の施策などが挙げられる。北米のいくつかの地域ではワクチンの義務化が接種率の上昇につながっているが、問題がないわけではない。従来行われてきた教育プログラムやキャンペーンの効果は概ねそれほど大きくはない。移動式ワクチン接種カートのような簡易型のワクチン接種施設を稼働したり、ワクチン接種を受ける上級の医療従事者をロールモデルとするなどの方策では、接種率の向上が観察されている。以上のことから、特に接種率の低い地域においては、医療従事者にワクチン接種プログラムへの参加を納得させるためには多面的なアプローチが必要である。

世界中の感染対策担当者が職員のワクチン接種接種率を向上させるために様々な作戦を実施している。移動式カートによる出張接種は、手間はかかるが、忙しいことを理由に接種に協力的でない医療者には効果がありそうだ。さらに、実施した対策、接種率の推移、副反応の発生状況、インフルエンザの発生状況を毎年記録に残し、対策の評価を行うことも重要である。
