過去十年間で、カルバペネマーゼ産生菌が世界中に拡散し、公衆衛生上の重大な懸念となっている。本稿では、カルバペネマーゼ産生菌に感染した熱傷患者に対処した著者らの経験と、熱傷ショック治療室を安全に再使用できるようにするためのコンタミネーション除去の方法について報告する。患者の退室後、ショック治療室を清掃したが、環境サンプリングによる培養で複数のカルバペネマーゼ産生菌が回収された。第 2 回目のコンタミネーション除去では、洗浄剤、蒸気および次亜塩素酸溶液による清掃の後、過酸化水素噴霧を実施したところ、その後の環境サンプリングによる培養でカルバペネマーゼ産生菌は回収されなかった。カルバペネマーゼ産生菌を保有する熱傷患者は、周囲の環境を重度に汚染するため、環境内のバイオバーデンを減らすには標準的な清掃では不十分である。

論文によると、通常清掃では、次亜塩素酸 1,000 ppm と 6％過酸化水素噴霧が行われていた。これで、点滴支柱台などの環境から菌が検出されていた。清掃の具体的な方法、遵守なども影響しているのかもしれないと思われた。
