環境内の水の供給源に存在する非結核性マイコバクテリアは、慢性肺疾患患者の呼吸器感染症を引き起こし得る。汚染された噴霧器は、呼吸器感染症の感染源となり得る。哺乳びん用蒸気滅菌器による処置は、細菌性病原体が播種された家庭用噴霧器を殺菌するが、この方法が非結核性マイコバクテリアの殺菌に有効かどうかは明らかでない。嚢胞性線維症患者の喀痰と混ぜた非結核性マイコバクテリアを播種した家庭用噴霧器の殺菌における、哺乳びん用蒸気滅菌器と水による念入りな洗浄との比較を行った。蒸気滅菌器による処置後に噴霧器から非結核性マイコバクテリアは回収されなかったが、水による洗浄後には生きた非結核性マイコバクテリアが増殖したことから、蒸気滅菌により非結核性マイコバクテリアを播種した家庭用噴霧器が効果的に殺菌されることが示された。
