Biofilms mean that the ‘environmentome’ of hospital surfaces is teeming with life

本稿は、「ICU の環境表面は、バイオフィルム内に存在する複数の細菌（特に多剤耐性菌）によって汚染されている」と報告した Hu. H らの論文（J Hosp Infect 2015;91:35）に対するコメントである。遊離塩素溶液を用いた二段階の清掃・消毒後に採取したにもかかわらず検出されたこと、しかも 12 か月経過しても生菌であったことは、非常に興味深い結果であった。ここで用いられた「エンバイロメントーム」解析では、我々になじみのない様々な菌が、それぞれのニッチをもってマットレスや枕、床などに存在していることが明らかになった。この解析手法にはまだ改善の余地があるものの、乾燥した環境表面から検出可能であったことは、従来の清掃・消毒法に限界があったことに合致しているし、より重要なこととして、「バイオフィルムは病院内の乾燥した環境表面に高頻度に存在する」という認識をもつ必要性を訴えている。
