市販の 0.2 µm フィルタ付硬膜外セットのニードルフィルタと、フィルタなしの標準的なニードルを比較する研究を実施した。0.2 µm フィルタによるろ過後の培養では、細菌は検出されなかった。フィルタ付ニードル（細孔サイズ 5 µm）とフィルタなしニードルでは細菌のブレイクスルーが観察された。細菌の完全な回収を達成するためには、フィルタ付システム（0.2 µm）を採用すべきである。この結果は、細孔サイズの異なるフィルタシステムは細菌の回収性能が異なることを示している。医療従事者は、製造者が使用する説明書からはフィルタの種類や性能についてどのようなことが読み取れるかを認識し、ニードルを介する細菌伝播を予防するうえで望ましい機能性が仕様書に記載されているかどうかを評価する必要がある。

フィルタ径とその加工精度の問題である。
ろ過性能はあくまでも平均的なものであり、より高いろ過性能を求めるのであればレベルの高いものを複数枚使用する必要がある。5 µmは細菌ろ過ではなく、ガラスやゴムの切り屑などのトラップには有用である。
