手指の効果的な洗浄・乾燥法は、微生物伝播を予防するうえで重要である。しかし、手指乾燥法ごとの微生物汚染の可能性に関する知見は少ない。本研究では、4 種類の方法（ペーパータオル、ローラータオル、温風乾燥機、およびジェット空気乾燥機）による手指乾燥時の空気媒介微生物の拡散の可能性を、3 つのモデルで評価した。ジェット空気乾燥機（最大 1.5 m）によって、他の乾燥方法（最大 0.75 m）よりも、使用者の手指から液体がより遠く広い範囲に拡散した。このことは、特に手指洗浄が不十分な場合に、空気媒介微生物の拡散のリスクは異なっている可能性を示している。

科学的根拠と臨床実務の合間で、何が適切な運用なのかを過敏にならずに見極める必要がある。ジェット空気乾燥機は一般社会の公共施設などには向いているかもしれないが、医療機関には不向きであることを示している。
