抗菌療法の新たなツールの開発は、多剤耐性微生物やクローンの出現、およびより効果的な抗菌戦略の必要性に対応するために行われる。到達が困難な細菌や静止中の細菌（すなわち、バイオフィルム中の細菌）に対する早期診断や介入を行ううえでの障壁を取り除くことは、困難な課題である。本総説では、医療関連感染の予防・制御に使用可能な有機的、無機的、およびハイブリッド物質について、一連の説明を行う。また、ナノ粒子および微小粒子を用いた抗菌薬に関する最新の知見を報告するとともに、それらの想定される作用機序について記述する。

薬品開発の 1 つとして、Drug Delivery System（DDS；薬物輸送システム）を活用する方法がある。薬剤を脂質膜などで包むことにより、途中で吸収・分解されることなく患部に到達させて治療効果を高めたり、あるいは、副作用の軽減を目的とするものである。本論文では、この DDS を用いた抗菌薬の開発や、ナノテクノロジーの技術を応用した銀イオンなどの金属の微粒子の抗菌活性の活用などについて解説している。特に薬剤師にとっては、現在の開発状況が垣間見える興味深いレビューである。
