マラリアは、地域的流行がみられない地域では主として輸入感染症である。本稿では、地域的流行がみられない地域における熱帯熱マラリア原虫（Plasmodium falciparum）による輸血関連マラリアの 1 症例を報告する。初期臨床症状はマラリアと一致するものであったが、疫学的リスク因子が特定されなかったためにマラリアの診断には至らなかった。本症例は、地域的流行がみられない国でも依然として輸血によるマラリアが発生することを示唆している。マラリアの地域的流行がみられない国では、輸血によるマラリアの予防・診断のためには臨床検査の役割が極めて重要である。

輸血によるマラリア感染事例は国内でも症例報告がある。企業戦士や旅行者の多くがこうした感染症の流行地域に旅行する機会も増えており、用心が必要である。
