医療従事者の髭に院内感染病原体が存在するかどうかは不明である。男性医療従事者 408 名の顔面の細菌保菌率を、髭のあり、なしで比較した。髭のある医療従事者のほうが、黄色ブドウ球菌(Staphylococcus aureus)(41.2%対 52.6%、P = 0.02)およびメチシリン耐性コアグラーゼ陰性ブドウ球菌(2.0%対 7.0%、P = 0.01)の保菌率が低かった。グラム陰性菌の保菌率はすべての医療従事者で低値であり、髭のタイプによる保菌率の差は認められなかった。全般的に、男性医療従事者の保菌状態は髭のあり、なしで同等であった。しかし、特定の細菌種の保菌率は、髭のない職員のほうが高かった。

監訳者コメント
髭の有無で医療従事者の顔面への細菌の保菌率を調査したもので,全体での差はなかったが、黄色ブドウ球菌とメチシリン耐性コアグラーゼ陰性ブドウ球菌(MRCNS)だけは、髭があるほうがかえって菌数が有意に少ない結果となった。その理由として、毎日の髭剃りの動作は、少なからず皮膚表面に小さな傷をつくり、その部位にブドウ球菌類をつきやすくしているというもので、ちょうど外科手術における剃毛の場合に似ている。また、髭があると検体サンプリングが実施しにくいため、見かけ上低めにでている可能性もあるとしている。白衣やネクタイが感染源となりうるとの研究はあるが、髭と院内感染との関連性については不明で未解決である。
