Higher prevalence of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among dental students

歯学部学生のメチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus；MRSA）保菌率は他学部学生と比較して高いという仮説を検証するため、患者への曝露歴が 5 年間から 6 年間の歯学部学生 100 名および他学部学生 81 名を対象として、鼻腔および咽頭の MRSA 保菌状況を PCR 法により検査した。181 名の全学生が臨床的に健康であり、抗菌薬使用者はいなかった。MRSA 保菌者は、歯学部学生（100 名中 20 名）のほうが他学部学生（81 名中 5 名）よりも有意に多かった（オッズ比 4.04、95％信頼区間 1.6 ～ 12.6、P ＝ 0.0033）。同様に、歯学部学生の携帯電話のほうが MRSA 定着率が高かった（それぞれ 100 台中 8 台、81 台中 1 台）。パルスフィールド・ゲル電気泳動法（PFGE）により、すべての MRSA 分離株を、疫学的に重要な菌株と識別することができた。これらの結果から、歯学部学生は MRSA に職業曝露していることが示唆される。
