握手は個人間の細菌伝播を媒介することが知られている。手洗いは、医療環境全体を通じて伝播率減少のための主要な取り組みとなっているが、手洗い後も個人の 80％は何らかの疾患の原因菌を保持している。フィスト・バンプ（拳タッチ）は、握手に代わるものとして多く行われるようになっている。著者らは、医療環境にフィスト・バンプを導入することにより、通常の握手と比較して、医療従事者間の接触時間と曝露される総表面積が減るために、細菌伝播率がさらに低下すると考えられることを明らかにした。
