バンクーバーの 2 病院で 1 年間に発生した院内クロストリジウム・ディフィシル(Clostridium difficile)感染の疫学を調査した。tcdC 変異(18 塩基対の欠失)と NAP1 株との強い関連が示されていることから、各症例の tcdC を PCR 法により解析した。特定された 214 症例のうち 51.9%は tcdC 変異型が原因菌であった。これらの症例は、本株の流行地の地域病院に入院している高齢患者で高頻度に認められた。全体で、サーベイランスの定義により再発に分類された 24 例中、少なくとも 5 例は再感染であった。分子的検査によって、病院間の大きな疫学的相違を特定することが可能になるとともに、C. difficile 感染症例のより正確な分類が可能となった。
