手術部位感染の予防には、手術室の空気中の細菌を少数に維持することが望ましい。これを達成するための方法として、換気、および手術室の全職員が透過性の低い素材で作製した術衣（クリーンエアスーツ）を着用することが挙げられる。著者らは、ポリプロピレン製の単回使用の被服システム、および混合素材（綿、ポリエステル）の再利用可能な被服システムの防護効果に差があるかどうかを、拡散チャンバー（dispersal chamber）内および手術時に評価した。空気中のコロニー形成単位（cfu）/ m³ の値は、いずれの条件においても単回使用の被服システム使用時のほうが有意に少なかった。
