アイルランドにおけるカルバペネマーゼ産生腸内細菌科細菌（CPE）の疫学には変化がみられ、報告症例数は 2010 年後半と 2011 年前半に増加した。報告症例の多くは重症管理病床に関係していた。CPE の直腸保菌率を調査し、国内の CPE スクリーニングガイドラインに情報を提供するため、2011 年 6 月にアイルランドの重症管理病床 40 室（成人 37 室、小児 3 室）を対象として 4 週間の全国的な予備調査を実施した。研究期間中にスクリーニング用のスワブ 760 件を採取したが、CPE は調査に参加した重症管理病床のいずれからも検出されなかった。

監訳者コメント：
重症管理病床でのケアにおける抗菌薬曝露のリスクが、おそらくは高い保菌率のリスク要因となっているのであろう。
