最近の研究から、エアロゾルの拡散はメチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌(meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus;MRSA)の伝播に関与している可能性が示唆されている。エアロゾル中のブドウ球菌の生存能に関する文献は比較的少ない。今回の研究では、黄色ブドウ球菌の代用としてエアロゾル中の表皮ブドウ球菌(Staphylococcus epidermidis)の生存率を測定するとともに、生存に対する相対湿度の影響を検討した。Goldberg ドラムを用いて、相対湿度が < 20%、40% ~ 60%、70% ~ 80%、および > 90%の場合の生存を評価した。表皮ブドウ球菌の回収率とエアロゾル中で安定なバチルス・アトロファエウス(Bacillus atrophaeus)芽胞の回収率との比を用いて表皮ブドウ球菌の経時的生分解率を推計し、エアロゾルの希釈および物理的崩壊の影響を補正した。すべての相対湿度において、5 時間(300 分)後には初回放出エアロゾルの 13%(95%信頼区間[CI] 10.1% ~ 16.2%)が回収された。5 時間後の平均生存率比(%表皮ブドウ球菌対%B. atrophaeus)は 47%(95%CI 33.5% ~ 60.5%)であった。各湿度における平均生存率比の 95%CI は部分的に重複していることから、湿度はエアロゾル中の表皮ブドウ球菌の生存に対して大きな影響を及ぼさないことが示唆された。長時間にわたる実験により、表皮ブドウ球菌は 76%の湿度では 5 日後にも回収されることが示された。細菌を含むエアロゾルの粒子径は、大半は吸入可能な範囲(< 2.1 μm)にあった。本研究により、エアロゾル中で表皮ブドウ球菌が生存することが確認され、病院内でブドウ球菌のエアロゾル伝播が生じる可能性が示唆された。
