Serratia marcescens-contaminated baby shampoo causing an outbreak among newborns at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

2008 年 11 月から 2009 年 1 月にサウジアラビアの King Abdulaziz 大学病院で、新生児集中治療室（NICU）の乳児 11 例と新生児室の乳児 3 例がセラチア・マルセセンス（Serratia marcescens）に感染した。NICU の乳児 11 例に合計 15 件の感染症が確認され、内訳は敗血症（5 例）、化膿性結膜炎（3 例）、尿路感染症（2 例）、髄膜炎（2 例）、および蜂巣炎（1 例）であった。新生児室の乳児 3 例に 3 件の感染症が確認され、内訳は化膿性結膜炎（2 例）および臍炎（1 例）であった。乳児 14 例中 13 例は完全に回復したが、1 例は S. marcescens による髄膜炎と敗血症で死亡した。すべての感染症は、最初の報告例の 5 日前に病棟に搬入された、元々汚染されていた乳児用シャンプーが原因であることが判明した。アウトブレイクはこのシャンプーの中止後に終結した。

監訳者コメント：
セラチアによる汚染は水周りに多くみられる、古典的なアウトブレイクである。シャンプー等には防腐剤が入っているが、殺菌作用に乏しい。国内でも継ぎ足し式のシャンプーの使用が一般家庭で行われているが、その際には内部を洗浄ししっかり乾燥すると衛生的である。
