Slime production is essential for the adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis in implant-related infections

眼内レンズ挿入術後の眼内炎、静脈カテーテル関連敗血症、および整形外科用インプラント感染症などの留置器材関連感染症から分離された表皮ブドウ球菌（Staphylococcus epidermidis）合計 32 株を対象として、粘液産生および人工表面への付着について調べた。これらのうち 21 株（65.6％）はコンゴーレッド培地法により粘液産生陽性であり、24 株（75％）は粘液の定量試験により人工表面に付着することが示された。付着細菌の大半（24 株中 19 株、79.1％）は粘液産生性であった。ウサギから得た抗粘液抗体により、定量試験で付着細菌と判定された全 24 株の付着が阻害された。粘液は、付着の過程に不可欠であると考えられ、その結果として留置器材上のバイオフィルム形成がもたらされる。
