医療器材を再使用するための消毒・滅菌の過程について、毒性の残存や素材の劣化・変性などの望ましくない影響がない手順の採用は、外科・内科処置のコスト削減を考える上で重要なポイントである。エチレンオキサイドガスは、医療施設における低温滅菌法として最も広く使用されているが、その毒性のため医療器具の再処理技術としての関心を下げている。この研究の目的は、人工的に汚染させたカテーテル類に対する高濃度二酸化炭素を用いた新規の低温消毒法の消毒効果を評価することである。得られた結果から、検査対象としたすべての細菌・酵母株がこの方法により完全に不活化されて、複数回の処理を行ってもカテーテル表面に明らかな変性は認められないことが示された。

単回使用医療器材(sinle-use only)の再利用(re-use)は(ディスポーザブル大国の米国を含めて)世界的な課題であり、医療費コスト削減の大きな流れの中で引き続き注目を集めている。この研究は高濃度二酸化炭素による低温消毒の効果を評価しようとするもので、エチレンオキサイドのような毒性対策が必要ない可能性があり、今後の展開が注目される。
