臨床監査はクリニカル・ガバナンスの一部であり、感染予防・制御に不可欠な要素である。臨床監査はtarget population^※の一部に対してしばしば実施される。標本は、source population^※※を代表していること、統計解析に十分なサイズであることが必要である。病院では、感染制御業務が同一病棟内でほぼ同じであることが多い（クラスター効果）。このことを、必要症例数の算出時に考慮しなければならない。標本サイズの決定は、遵守率の推計に求められる精度、観測値と予測値の差、または介入実施前後の差に基づく。病院全体の遵守率をコスト増なしに推計するためには、たとえ各病棟で得ることができる観察データが少ない場合であっても、一部の病棟で多種類の業務を監査するよりは、多くの病棟で対象を絞った監査を行うことを推奨する。
