Prevalence of healthcare-associated infection in Scottish intensive care units

2005年10月から2006年10月に、集中治療室（ICU）を含むスコットランドのすべての急性期病院を対象とした全国的な医療関連感染症の点有病率調査を実施した。この調査では、医療関連感染症の有病率を算出し、ICUにおける医療資源への負担を判定した。ICUでの医療関連感染症有病率を非ICU患者と比較した。ICU患者の医療関連感染症有病率は27.1％であり、非ICU患者（9.3％）と比較して有意に高かった。また、特定の感染症、すなわち肺炎・下気道感染症、血流感染症、および手術部位感染症の有病率も、ICU患者のほうが非ICU患者よりも有意に高かった。これらの結果から、感染部位にかかわらず、すべての医療関連感染症はICUの医療資源に対して負担となっていることが判明した。スコットランドのICUでは、医療関連感染症の有病率が高いことが患者の安全やICUの医療資源に大きな影響を及ぼしており、このことから集中治療専門医と感染制御チームが強い連携を継続する必要性が示された。
