軍人と民間人の患者を同一施設内でケアすることにより、軍人負傷者から民間人への多剤耐性アシネトバクター・バウマニー（Acinetobacter baumannii）の伝播が生じる。現在の分子タイピング技術は、A. baumannii分離株間の関連性を示すのに有用であるが、小規模なアウトブレイク時の近縁分離株間の相違を解析できないため、伝播の連鎖が不明となることが多い。最近、バーミンガムで発生した病院アウトブレイクでは、6例の患者に標準的手法では識別不能な多剤耐性A. baumannii分離株の保菌がみられた。全ゲノムシークエンス法を用いてこれらの分離株の一塩基多型を判定することによって、本アウトブレイクの伝播に関する複数の疫学的仮説を検証することができた。

Single nucleotide polymorphisms（SNPs）により識別解析を行った論文である。シークエンサーは気軽に使用できる器材ではないので、ハードウエア的な利便性が課題だろう。
