歯科用ユニットは連日、一日中多くの患者の治療に使用され、特定の構成部品の微生物汚染が交差感染の重大な感染源となり得る。患者や歯科スタッフは歯科用ユニットから出る水やエアロゾルに頻繁に曝露されるため、歯科用ユニットの水の質は非常に重要である。この水は細菌、酵母、真菌、ウイルス、原虫、単細胞藻類、および線虫といった様々な微生物叢の温床であり、歯科用ユニットの水ラインの細い配管に水が滞留するために形成されるバイオフィルム中の微生物で汚染されることがある。このようにして汚染された水を、歯科用ハンドピースや3ウェイ・エアウォーターシリンジなどを用いた各種の治療に使用すると、感染の原因となるエアロゾルが発生する。本総説では、歯科用ユニット水ラインによる感染リスク、および歯科用ユニット水ラインの消毒に利用可能な各種の水処理方法に重点を置いて述べる。

歯科領域の感染制御はこれまで主に目に見えるところで使用される歯科用器具にその焦点が置かれてきた。本論文は、いわば見えないところである水ラインの汚染に言及している。本文中には、これまで水ラインから分離された様々な病原体が示されている。これまで水ラインに関連するアウトブレイクは報告されていないものの、患者のリスクを低減させるための水ラインの処置は必要であろう。機器製造会社などが様々な消毒方法を提示している。
