医療関連感染の問題は、一般市民、特に医療サービス利用者の関心が増大している。これと同時に、医療分野全体の開放性と透明性の向上を図ろうとする動きがある。かくして我々は、医療関連感染の発生率や感染制御の実践に関連する成績の公的報告が、英国国民保健サービス（NHS）においてますます確立されていくのを目にしている。では、これらによって何が変わったのであろうか？ そして「一般市民の知る権利」はどの程度定着したのか？ 本稿では、一般市民が医療関連感染の発生率を知る権利については十分に周知されているものの、このような情報の意義に関するエビデンスの基盤は限定的であることを論じる。また、その意義を強化するために医療機関の理事会や幹部が講じることができる措置について提起する。手指衛生を例に取ると、患者が自らの感染リスク低下を図るために、医療従事者に対して問いかける権利をもつと感じる環境にはまだ至っていないと考えられる。

日本では医療関連感染の発生率の公的報告や一般市民の知る権利といった考え方は未発達であるが、近い将来英国やアメリカの動きに追従すると考えられる。その際、本総説にも書かれているが、一般市民が知り得た情報を正しく解釈する力がないうちにこのような制度を設けることは、不要な混乱を招くことを十分に留意しなければならない。
