発展途上国の医療従事者は、高リスクおよび不十分な安全予防策のために、職業曝露により血液由来病原体に感染する機会が多い。医療従事者の喪失は、構築途上にある医療制度を著しく損なう可能性があるので、リスクの最小化を図ることが重要である。3種の病原体（ヒト免疫不全ウイルス、B型肝炎ウイルス、およびC型肝炎ウイルス）の伝播リスクを調査するため、およびリスクの上昇にかかわる発展途上国特有の要因を特定するために、文献検索を実施した。発展途上国は、職業曝露リスクを最小化するうえで多くの困難に直面している。これらの問題に取り組むために、国際レベルと国家レベルの両面での活動が行われてきた。医療従事者は構築途上の医療制度の極めて重要な構成要員であり、すべての医療従事者の喪失を防止するために、その保護を図ることが肝要である。

我が国とは国情の異なる発展途上国のレポートであるが、医療資源の貧弱さにおいては実はこれらの国と大差がない。そういった観点でこのレポートを読むと、我が国にも共通する課題が内包されていることに気付くであろう。
