プリオンは、伝達性海綿状脳症(TSE)として知られる一群の致死性神経変性疾患の原因因子とされる感染性蛋白質である。伝達性海綿状脳症のヒトへの既知の医原性感染経路は、プリオンに汚染された手術器具や生体物質を介するものである。プリオンは、多くの一般的な病原体とは異なり、従来の汚染除去処理に対して極めて強い耐性を示す。我々は最近、二酸化チタンベースの不均一系光触媒酸化によりプリオンの感染性の大幅な低下が可能であることを明らかにした。本研究では、光フェントン試薬をベースにした均一系光触媒法によるプリオン蛋白の潜在的分解能について検討した。光フェントン試薬は組み換え型プリオン蛋白を効果的に分解するだけでなく、自然感染または実験感染した動物の脳標本中の総蛋白質量および羊スクレイピーの脳ホモジネート中のPrPSc(スクレイピー・プリオン蛋白質)を減少させることが示された。
