Audience readings of media messages about MRSA

本論文では、全国紙によるメチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（MRSA）に関する報道が一般市民の認識と一致しているかどうか、およびどの程度一致しているかを調べた。MRSAに関するメディア報道の調査内容と、大ロンドン地域で取材した人口統計学的背景の多様な被験者60例から収集したデータを比較した。取材データから、多くの人はMRSAを抗菌薬の投与歴ではなく、不潔で管理が不十分な病院と関連があるという共通見解を有していた。MRSAの責任は国民保健サービス（National Health Service；NHS）の管理体質にあると予断するような、一部のメディア報道が流布しているようであるが、その一方で、特にMRSAの被害を受けた著名人などの報道は、一般市民の共感を呼んではいないようであった。また、微生物原因説や免疫システムなどの科学的理解に基づく考え方が、瘴気説のような俗説と共存していることも本研究から判明した。このように、メディアと認識の比較から、一般市民の認識には生物医学的な情報とともに、病原体、伝染病、原因などに関する前近代科学的理解が存在することが示された。今回の知見は、MRSA感染に関する一般市民および患者の見解の理解に寄与するものである。

メディア対策は我が国でも大きな課題である。情報の正確な周知徹底については、メディアと医療の専門家の両者による歩み寄りが重要であろう。また、広く市民向けの情報開示も行っていく必要がある。
