英国国民健康サービス（NHS）トラスト病院は、メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌（MRSA）血流感染を報告し、さらにその減少を目標とすることが求められている。他のタイプの重篤な病院感染を発症する患者のほうがはるかに多いことを考慮すると、MRSA血流感染を標的とすることは地域における優先事項に影響を及ぼすこと、またMRSA血流感染の制御を高い優先事項とすることは妥当ではない、または費用対効果に優れていないことを、著者らは主張したい。感染制御上の優先事項を決定する理由は明確にすべきである。また、優先事項を設定するための公的かつ合理的なプロセスを導入することも、国レベルの目標が地域の優先事項を歪曲することを防ぐと考えられる。
