院内感染は、新生児集中治療室における死亡および罹患の主要な原因の1つである。医療関連感染の予防は、宿主防御の強化、医療従事者による微生物伝播の遮断、および抗菌薬の慎重な使用の促進などの、感染に対する感受性の低下を図る戦略に基づいている。いくつかの戦略が利用可能であり、その中には手指消毒の実践、中心静脈カテーテル由来血流感染の予防、治療と予防のための抗菌薬の慎重な使用、宿主防御の強化、皮膚のケア、および母乳による早期の経腸栄養などがある。
