1983年、キューバは継続的なサーベイランスシステムとして最初の院内感染の制御および予防に関する国家プログラム（Nosocomial Infection Control and Prevention National Program）を制定した。1997年、著者らはキューバ国内の知見と国際的な成績を比較するために、最初の院内感染有病率調査を実施した。2004年5月24～29日に、無作為化デザインにより2回目の有病率調査を実施した。全院内感染率は7.3％（4,240例中284例、95％信頼区間5.9～7.4）であり、1件以上の院内感染が認められた患者は6.7％であった。集中治療室、中等症治療室、および熱傷治療室で高い感染率が認められた。最も頻度の高い院内感染は手術部位感染であったのに対し、尿路感染は少数にとどまった。感染の約53％から微生物培養結果が得られ、分離頻度が高い病原体は黄色ブドウ球菌およびシュードモナス（Pseudomonas）属菌であった。セファロスポリン系およびアミノグリコシド系抗菌薬が、院内感染の治療に最も多く使用されていた。キューバ国内の調査で認められた院内感染の危険因子は、国際的な報告と同様であった。

監訳者コメント：
ラテン系諸国でも最近、サーベイランスの実施に関する動きがある。近隣する諸国でのサーベイランスデータをもとに、社会事情を加味して自国の問題点を見いだすことは有効な手段である。
