クロストリジウム・ディフィシール(Clostridium difficile)は、糞便中の病原体による汚染手指から接触面への伝播などにより、世界中で院内感染症の主要な原因に急速になりつつある。そこで本研究では、医療施設でよく用いられる接触面であるステンレススチール上のC. difficileの栄養型および芽胞の生存を評価し、5種類の銅合金(銅含有量65~100%)と比較した。C. difficileは増殖に長時間の培養を要するため、全菌数および生存菌数を蛍光二重染色法で推計した。生存評価には、代謝活性測定のために酸化還元色素である5-シアノ-2,3-ジトリルテトラゾリウム(CTC)を用いた。試験結果から、銅含有量が70%を超える銅合金上のC. difficileの栄養型および芽胞の生存率は、ステンレススチールと比較して有意に低下することが示された。銅合金上では24~48時間後に芽胞の死滅が認められたのに対して、ステンレススチール上では168時間後でも有意な死菌率は認められなかった。CTCを使用したデータは、培養と同様の結果が得られ、培養よりも迅速(8時間)な生存分析が可能であった。この結果は、病院やその他の医療施設で銅合金を使用することにより、汚染表面からのC. difficileの伝播が減少する可能性があることを示している。

監訳者コメント:
銀と同じく、調理用器具に銅製が多いひとつの理由がここにある。銀に比べてコストも安く、比較的容易に導入されていくものと思われる。
